First residence permit (with a residence visa)

If you entered on a residence visa, you apply to AIMA for the residence permit by appointment, handing in the application in person at an AIMA store. The temporary card is valid 2 years and renews for 3-year periods.[1][10][3]

Step by step

  1. Get the residence visa at a Portuguese consulate (see 'consulados').
  2. Book with AIMA (the date may be printed on the visa) or use the online platform where available.
  3. Go to the AIMA store with the signed Modelo 1 form and the documents.
  4. Pay the fees and wait for the decision and the card.

Good to know

The fee table was updated on 1 March 2026 (Portaria 307/2023, consolidated). It has two columns: the base amount and the amount with the 25% reduction of point XIV, which applies to in-person service until the services move to a digital channel. Check the amount on your payment slip.
