Periodic vehicle inspection (MOT)

Inspections are done at a licensed inspection centre (CITV) of your choice. The due date depends on vehicle type and the day and month of first registration, and you can go up to 3 months early. Fees are set nationally by IMT.[3][2][7]

Who it is for

Anyone can take the vehicle in, as long as they bring the documents.

  • Passenger cars: first at 4 years, then every 2 years until 8, then yearly.[1]
  • Light goods vehicles: first at 2 years, then yearly.[2]
  • Taxis, ambulances, school transport and driving-school cars: first at 1 year, yearly until 7, every 6 months from year 8.[1]
  • Deadline: by the day and month of first registration; can be done in the 3 months before.[2]
  • Fail: re-inspection within 30 calendar days at the same centre (at another centre you pay a full inspection).[2]
  • Motorcycles and light trailers: the requirement only applies once a scheduling order (portaria) is published.[1]

Step by step

  1. Check the deadline (day and month of first registration) and how often your vehicle is due.
  2. Pick a CITV from IMT's list; you may call the centre to book.
  3. Check for open recalls: an uncorrected active recall means a fail.
  4. Bring the vehicle and documents; you get an inspection sheet to keep in the car.
  5. If it fails, get it re-inspected at the same centre within 30 days.

Good to know

2026 fees (Deliberação 1598-A/2025, in force since 1 January 2026). An uncorrected active recall means a fail. No windscreen sticker is needed any more. A late inspection costs the same, but driving past the deadline can be fined. IMT's 221 approved CITVs are on the mainland.

    Nos anos em que o veículo tem de ir à inspeção, a inspeção deve ser feita até ao dia e mês do primeiro registo do veículo. A inspeção pode ser feita nos três meses anteriores a essa data.
    Quando o veículo reprova na inspeção, tem de corrigir as deficiências encontradas na inspeção e levar o veículo a uma reinspeção no prazo de 30 dias seguidos após a inspeção.
    Faça a reinspeção no mesmo centro onde ocorreu a inspeção inicial. Se optar por outro centro, vai ser preciso fazer uma nova inspeção completa.
