60 days before expiry IRN posts a PIN letter with a Multibanco payment reference (valid 60 days). Pay €16.20 and the new card arrives by registered mail, on average in 10 working days, with the same photo and data.[1]

Who it is for

People aged 25+, Portuguese nationals living in Portugal, whose biometrics were updated at the last renewal, not under the 'maior acompanhado' regime, and who have not already renewed another way.

Step by step

  1. Wait for the PIN letter with the payment reference (and an SMS from CCIDADÃO if your mobile is on file).
  2. Pay at a Multibanco ATM or via home banking: entity 21898, reference from the letter, €16.20.
  3. Receive the card at home; show the PIN letter and photo ID to the CTT courier.

Available during IRN counter opening hours, for Citizen Card, passport, birth, death and vehicle registration. You can also take a paper ticket on site.

The gov.pt renewal page gives different hours (weekdays 8:00-20:00, national call rate). The IRN booking page says "book online or by phone" but does not say this line takes bookings.

Good to know

If you don't pay within 60 days the reference expires; renew online or in person instead. Under-25s can only renew in person.
